Each spring, Union College celebrates Earth Day not just as a moment-but as a movement. This year, Earth Day falls on April 22, with Union's annual community clean-up taking place on April 25, the first Saturday after.

For Kevin Trigonis, who has participated in the event for six years, Earth Day is deeply personal. An outdoor enthusiast who enjoys fishing, hunting, hiking, and spending time with family, he believes protecting the environment is about preserving it for future generations. "I want my grandchildren to enjoy the environment," he says.

Beyond personal passion, Trigonis stresses the bigger picture: pollution affects both our backyard and the world. Raising awareness about climate change is crucial, and Earth Day offers something powerful-community action. "If we destroy our environment, we can't get it back," he explains. "This day allows us to come together, get to know each other, and work side by side."

Clean-ups take place across Schenectady, including the Goose Hill Neighborhood Association, SCSD, the Boulevard Appreciation Neighborhood Association (BANA), the Union Triangle, Union Avenue, and Vale Cemetery. Students can sign up through Community Connections in the student portal or email Volunteer@Union.edu. Participation is open to individuals, teams, fraternities, clubs, and athletic groups.

Local leaders-including Gary McCarthy and Angelo Santabarbara-along with Union faculty and administrators, regularly show their support.

All you need to bring? You, a positive attitude, and maybe a friend. Planning begins months in advance to ensure a safe, meaningful day of service that strengthens both campus and community.
