Every October, Union College turns pink into a powerful display of community, advocacy, and hope. In 2023, Marissa Gnitzcavich '26 was inspired by the Breast Cancer awareness efforts she saw at other campuses. Through her work-study placement at the Kenney Center for Community Engagement and Outreach, she set out to create a unified impact at Union, launching what has now become an annual, campus-wide tradition: the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. Marissa collaborated with key student organizations-including the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Greek Life, the Wicker Wellness Center, Student Activities, the Kenney Center, and Colleges Against Cancer-to build a strong foundation for the campaign. Screen Designs Inc. partnered to print custom pink T-shirts, and proceeds support BreastCancer.org, whose mission is to help people make sense of the complex medical and personal information about breast health and breast cancer. What makes this fundraiser especially meaningful is its lasting visibility: "The most rewarding part is seeing students wear the shirts long after October. It shows the long-term impact," Marissa shared.
This year, SAAC Co-President Eleanor Wintringer emphasized the importance of athlete involvement. With 26 varsity teams participating, the campaign reaches a large portion of campus. "It feels like a family effort," Ellie shared. "Athletes, fans, and the campus community come together to learn, support, and advocate." Funds raised are doubled by BreastCancer.org, and this year, Union raised $6,600-matched to $13,200.
The campaign's success is rooted in collaboration, with support from staff and student leaders who help organize events, tabling, and outreach. As Union continues this tradition, the message remains clear: awareness, unity, and community action make a difference-one pink shirt at a time.
