What began as a small initiative dreamed up by student Naziah Armor during his junior year has grown into one of the most heartwarming events on campus - Chargers Candy Carnival. Inspired by his own childhood experiences of missing out on trick-or-treating, Naziah set out to create a space where Schenectady youth could celebrate Halloween in a safe, magical, and inclusive environment.
With early support from Kevin Trigonis, the Community Engagement team, and fellow student leader Danielle Brown, the first event was held in Union's Old Chapel in 2023. "We wanted to bring fantasy into reality," Naziah shares. "We weren't just giving candy - we were inspiring dreams."
Now held annually on the Sunday before Halloween, the Candy Carnival features face painting, spooky popcorn balls, DIY slime, Legos, student organization booths, and plenty of candy. What started with a few tables has expanded to include Greek life, BSU, NSBE, Mamba, NAACP, and even performances from groups like the African Dance team.
This year's event on Sunday, October 26, was a huge success - drawing over 500 families from the community to enjoy the fun. From face painting and spooky popcorn balls to the thrilling haunted house in Beuth, the energy never stopped. More than 45 costumes were given away, and the room was filled with nonstop smiles and laughter throughout the day. Danielle shared that moments like these remind her why community work matters - and we couldn't agree more.
Reflecting on the event, Danielle notes, "This event taught me leadership, communication, and the power of giving back. Seeing kids' eyes light up - that's the best part."
With community feedback, greater accessibility, and growing participation, the Candy Carnival continues to evolve - offering joy, hope, and connection to every child who walks through the doors.
Thank you to everyone who makes this possible - and a special shoutout to the CCC Committee for their dedication in keeping the magic alive. Let's keep the spirit going!
