Bethel Northside is a community center and ministry of Bethel Full Gospel Church in Schenectady, New York, focusing on providing support and resources to the community. Among its offerings, the center operates a mobile food pantry to help combat food insecurity in the area. The center is a collaborative partner with various community organizations, including the Schenectady City School District, to provide essential programs and services to local residents.

Waiver of Liability

This is a legally binding waiver executed by me, 'the Participant' named above, to The Trustees of Union College in the Town of Schenectady in the State of New York a/k/a Union College. For Participants under 18 years of age, this waiver must be executed by a parent or legal guardian.

1. I, the undersigned am interested in participating in, or required to participate in, off-campus volunteer events sponsored by Union to be held between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026, which activities involve: 

Walking or being transported by bus to local volunteer sites in Schenectady or the surrounding area. Volunteering at sites that include but are not limited to: non-profit organizations, donation centers, food pantries, nursing homes, schools and youth centers, animal shelters, parks and nature preserves, gardens and farms, neighborhoods. Performing physical or manual tasks that include but are not limited to: cleaning, organizing, sorting, packing, lifting, carrying, gardening, farming, yardwork, outdoor cleanup, painting, event setup, athletic activities.

2. It is my express intent that this Waiver shall bind the members of my family and spouse, if I am alive, and my estate, heirs, administrators, personal representatives, or assigns, if I am deceased, and shall be deemed as a release, waiver, discharge, and covenant not to sue Union.

3. I understand that there are certain dangers, hazards, and risks inherent in this exercise which may include, but not be limited to, accidental injury arising from the activities listed under paragraph 1 above, which could result in serious or even mortal injuries; and that Union cannot and does not assume responsibility for any such personal injuries. I hereby release, discharge, and agree to hold harmless Union and its Trustees, agents, employees, and representatives from any and all liability arising out of or in connection with my participation in the exercise. For purposes of this Waiver, liability means all claims, demands, losses, causes of action, suits, or judgments of any kinds that I or my heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns may have against Union, its Trustees, agents, employees, representatives, and volunteers because of personal injury, accident, illness, or death that occurs to a person, including me, and that results from any cause including, but not limited to, the passive or active negligence or other acts of Union, its Trustees, agents, employees, representatives, and volunteers other than fraud, willful misconduct, or a knowing violation of the law.

4. Knowing the dangers, hazards, and risks of such activities, and in consideration of being permitted to participate in the exercise, on behalf of myself, my heirs, and personal representative(s), I , the undersigned, do hereby agree to assume all the risks and responsibilities surrounding my participation in the exercise and, in advance, do hereby release and forever discharge, waive, and covenant not to sue Union from and against any and all liability for any harm, injury, damage, claims, demands, actions, causes of action, costs, and expenses of any nature whatsoever which I may have or which may hereafter accrue to me, arising out of or related to any loss, damage, or injury, including, but not limited to, suffering and death, that may be sustained by me while in, on, upon, or in transit to or from the premises where the exercise or any adjunct to the exercise occurs or is being conducted.

In signing this Agreement, I acknowledge and represent that I have fully informed myself of the contents of the foregoing Waiver of Liability Agreement by reading it before I sign it and understand that I sign this Agreement as my own free act and deed; no oral representations, statements, or inducements, apart from the foregoing written statement, have been made, I further state that I am at least eighteen (18) years of age and fully competent to sign this Agreement; and that I execute this Agreement for full, adequate, and complete consideration fully intending to be bound by the same.

6. I further agree that this Agreement shall be construed in accordance with the laws of the State of New York. If any term or provision of this Agreement shall be held illegal, unenforceable, or in conflict with any law governing this Agreement, the validity of the remaining portions shall not be affected thereby. Any action in regard to this Agreement or arising out of its terms and conditions shall be instituted before the New York State Supreme Court, Fourth Judicial Department, Schenectady County.

Support one of the Schenectady Urban Farms in battling Food Insecurity.

Assistance is needed with harvesting and general maintenance.

The Urban Farms are community-supported urban farming initiatives situated in the City of Schenectady. The community collaborates in the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs, while also engaging in tending to honeybees and egg-laying chickens. In all, everyone connected to the Urban Farms is engaged in creating a greener Schenectady and shares in the bountiful harvest.

Support Union College's own Kelly Adirondack Center in updating the Henry Gerber Reist Bird Sanctuary.

Assistance is needed repairing trails and maintaining pathways. 

The Kelly Adirondack Center at Union College, located in Niskayuna, serves as a hub for interdisciplinary study of the Adirondack Park and conservation issues. It houses the Adirondack Research Library, which contains a unique collection of materials, including the papers of prominent conservationists.

The H. G. Reist Bird Sanctuary is a 111-acre nature preserve in Niskayuna stewarded by the Hudson-Mohawk Bird Club, which is open to the public for nature walks and birding. This protected land, which has several miles of trails, provides a valuable habitat for birds and other wildlife right in the middle of a suburban area.

Malta Community Day is an annual, free, family-friendly event held at Shenantaha Creek Park in the Town of Malta. The day-long celebration features live entertainment, local vendors, food, and a variety of activities for all ages, including bounce houses, pony rides, and fire truck displays. The event is organized to help build a sense of community identity by bringing together residents and local businesses, emergency services, and community organizations.

Support a local comfort home and close partner of the College. 

Assistance is needed with lawn maintenance and item organization

The Joan Nicole Prince Home is a non-profit comfort home in Glenville, that provides a safe and caring residence for terminally ill patients in their final days. Opened in 2006, the home provides 24-hour bedside care for two residents at a time in a homelike environment. The home operates independently and is run by staff and volunteers, relying solely on donations, grants, and community support for funding. The home is a close partner of Union College - many students serve as volunteer caretakers and complete research at the facility.

Assistance is needed with end of summer garden support. 

The Schenectady City School District's Farm to School initiative connects students with locally produced foods through school meals, classroom lessons, and hands-on activities. The program incorporates district gardens as outdoor classrooms where students learn about agriculture, nutrition, and regional food traditions. Additionally, the district operates the "Farm to Family Wheels" program, a mobile market that distributes free fresh produce to families in underserved neighborhoods during the summer months.

Working in partnership with organizations like Friends of the Greenhouse Inc., the Sustainable Living Center also helps to preserve the historic integrity of the Charles Steinmetz Greenhouse complex while promoting sustainable living practices and a local food system.

The Daily Bread Food Pantry, a prominent food bank in Schenectady County, is a project of St. Luke's Church and is operated by volunteers. It provides essential food programs to the community and is one of the largest food pantries in the county. The pantry serves a large number of individuals and families, providing thousands of meals annually to help combat food insecurity in the area, as well as programs to distribute other needed items. Union College students support efforts at Daily Bread throughout the year - including the Schenectady Shares initiative that tackles food insecurity issues each winter.

For purposes of this Waiver, liability means all claims, demands, losses, causes of action, suits, or judgments of any kinds that I or my heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns may have against Union, its Trustees, agents, employees, representatives, and volunteers because of personal injury, accident, illness, or death that occurs to a person, including me, and that results from any cause including, but not limited to, the passive or active negligence or other acts of Union, its Trustees, agents, employees, representatives, and volunteers other than fraud, willful misconduct, or a knowing violation of the law.

4. Knowing the dangers, hazards, and risks of such activities, and in consideration of being permitted to participate in the exercise, on behalf of myself, my heirs, and personal representative(s), I , the undersigned, do hereby agree to assume all the risks and responsibilities surrounding my participation in the exercise and, in advance, do hereby release and forever discharge, waive, and covenant not to sue Union from and against any and all liability for any harm, injury, damage, claims, demands, actions, causes of action, costs, and expenses of any nature whatsoever which I may have or which may hereafter accrue to me, arising out of or related to any loss, damage, or injury, including, but not limited to, suffering and death, that may be sustained by me while in, on, upon, or in transit to or from the premises where the exercise or any adjunct to the exercise occurs or is being conducted.

5. In signing this Agreement, I acknowledge and represent that I have fully informed myself of the contents of the foregoing Waiver of Liability Agreement by reading it before I sign it and understand that I sign this Agreement as my own free act and deed; no oral representations, statements, or inducements, apart from the foregoing written statement, have been made, I further state that I am at least eighteen (18) years of age and fully competent to sign this Agreement; and that I execute this Agreement for full, adequate, and complete consideration fully intending to be bound by the same.

6. I further agree that this Agreement shall be construed in accordance with the laws of the State of New York. If any term or provision of this Agreement shall be held illegal, unenforceable, or in conflict with any law governing this Agreement, the validity of the remaining portions shall not be affected thereby. Any action in regard to this Agreement or arising out of its terms and conditions shall be instituted before the New York State Supreme Court, Fourth Judicial Department, Schenectady County.
